AI Risk In Your Org

The AI Risk Your Organization Might Be Underestimating

AI Risk In Your Org

Artificial Intelligence in the workplace is evolving faster than most organizations expected. From automated writing tools to AI-powered data analysis, employees are discovering new ways to improve efficiency and drive employee productivity.

But alongside the benefits of AI in the workplace, security and compliance leaders are also facing a new challenge: understanding the risks that come with rapid AI adoption.

To gauge how organizations are thinking about these risks, we recently ran a LinkedIn poll asking our community which AI-related issue concerns them the most. The responses revealed something interesting.

While several risks received strong attention, Shadow AI without visibility received significantly fewer votes than other options.

At first glance, that might seem like good news. If fewer professionals see Shadow AI as a major concern, perhaps organizations feel confident about their visibility into AI in the workplace. But the results may actually reveal something different.

The Risk That Hides in Plain Sight

Shadow AI refers to employees using artificial intelligence tools without approval, visibility, or oversight from IT and security teams. Much like the rise of shadow IT over the past decade, these tools are often adopted organically as employees look for ways to work faster or automate repetitive tasks.

In many cases, these employees are simply trying to be more efficient. Generative AI tools, document assistants, and AI-powered Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) features can significantly improve workflows and support human AI collaboration.

The problem is that these tools are frequently introduced outside existing cybersecurity compliance or governance processes. When organizations don’t know which AI tools employees are using (or what data is being shared with them) it becomes much harder to manage security risks or maintain data breach prevention strategies.

And that’s where Shadow AI becomes dangerous.

Why the Poll Results Matter

In our poll, respondents appeared to be more concerned about data leakage into public AI tools than about Shadow AI itself.

That concern is understandable. Data leakage is a clear and immediate threat. Employees may unknowingly paste confidential information into public AI systems, creating exposure risks that can impact regulatory obligations such as healthcare compliance or HIPAA compliance.

But here’s where things get interesting. Many data leakage incidents are actually symptoms of Shadow AI.

When employees use unsanctioned AI tools, whether through personal accounts, browser extensions, or free public platforms, security teams lose visibility into how data is being processed, stored, or shared.

In other words, the very risk many respondents identified as their top concern may actually stem from the risk that received the fewest votes.

AI Adoption Is Moving Faster Than Governance

Artificial Intelligence adoption is accelerating across nearly every industry. From document drafting to workflow automation, organizations are rapidly discovering new use cases for generative AI training, analytics tools, and AI-powered productivity platforms.

Yet governance often struggles to keep pace.

Without the right controls in place, organizations may unknowingly introduce risks that impact cybersecurity compliance, regulatory obligations, or internal policies. This is especially true in regulated industries where HIPAA training for employees, compliance training for employees, and employee compliance training are already critical components of operational security.

That’s why many organizations are beginning to evaluate their AI readiness.

Conducting an AI readiness assessment or cybersecurity assessment can help identify where AI tools are being used, how employees interact with them, and where visibility gaps may exist. In some cases, this evaluation is combined with a broader security risk assessment to ensure AI adoption aligns with existing security and compliance frameworks.

Visibility Starts with Education

Technology controls alone won’t solve the Shadow AI problem. Employees adopt new tools because they help them work more efficiently. The key is ensuring those tools are used safely and responsibly.

That’s where employee cybersecurity training, cyber awareness training, and cybersecurity awareness training play a crucial role. Training programs that cover artificial intelligence in the workplace, responsible AI usage, and safe data handling can help employees understand when AI tools are appropriate and when they may introduce risk.

Organizations are also expanding their learning programs to include generative AI training and Microsoft 365 training, ensuring employees can use productivity tools effectively while maintaining compliance.

When paired with the right cyber security training platform and compliance training solutions, education becomes one of the most effective ways to close the visibility gap.

The Question Every Organization Should Ask

The poll results didn’t necessarily suggest that Shadow AI isn’t a problem. Instead, they may highlight something even more important: Shadow AI is harder to see and therefore easier to underestimate.

Security leaders can only protect what they can see. And in an environment where AI tools are evolving daily, visibility becomes the foundation of effective governance.

The real question may not be whether Shadow AI exists inside your organization, it’s how much of it is happening without your knowledge? Because the risk receiving the fewest votes might actually be the one most organizations haven’t fully discovered yet.
