Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Security Doesn’t Stop When October Ends

Year Round Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity Awareness Month happens every October. Cybersecurity doesn’t.

Throughout the month, businesses may place additional emphasis on employee education, phishing awareness, passwords, multi-factor authentication (MFA), software updates, and other important security practices.

That attention is valuable.

But the real measure of Cybersecurity Awareness Month isn’t what an organization does during October. It’s what employees and businesses continue doing afterward.

That’s why the final week of BSN’s Lock It Down theme focuses on an important principle: cybersecurity requires ongoing maintenance.

Security Is Never Really Finished

Businesses would never expect technology to remain unchanged forever.

Applications change. Devices are added. Employees adopt new tools. New vulnerabilities are discovered. Software eventually reaches the end of its supported life.

Cybersecurity has to change alongside that environment.

An organization can implement strong security measures today and still need to revisit them tomorrow. That’s especially true when it comes to software updates.

Updates can introduce features and improve performance, but they can also address known security vulnerabilities. Delaying them can leave weaknesses exposed longer than necessary.

Cybersecurity isn’t only about putting protections in place. It’s about maintaining them.

Don’t Let Small Problems Pile Up

Updates are easy to postpone. An employee doesn’t want to restart their computer in the middle of the workday. A business-critical application requires testing before a new version is deployed.  An older system still works, so replacing it doesn’t seem urgent.

A device falls outside the normal update process. Each delay may seem relatively small. Over time, those small issues can accumulate.

That’s why Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a useful opportunity for organizations to examine not only what security technology they have, but how consistently that technology is being maintained.

Look Beyond the Computer

Software maintenance also extends beyond traditional desktops and servers.

Modern businesses depend on phones, tablets, browsers, routers, cloud applications, collaboration tools, and a growing collection of connected technology. Those systems require attention too.

As organizations adopt more technology, maintaining visibility becomes increasingly important.

You can’t maintain something if you don’t know it’s there. That makes asset awareness, software maintenance, and regular security reviews part of the same broader conversation.

Cybersecurity Awareness Should Work the Same Way

The maintenance principle doesn’t apply only to technology. Employees need reinforcement too.

A security awareness course completed once doesn’t prepare someone for every threat they will encounter for the rest of their career.

Threats change. Technology changes. Employee responsibilities change. New tools, including AI, create new opportunities as well as new risks. Cybersecurity education has to evolve alongside them.

That’s why Cybersecurity Awareness Month should serve as a catalyst rather than a finish line. October can create momentum. Ongoing education helps maintain it.

Turn October Into a Year-Round Conversation

For MSPs, this is one of the most valuable messages to carry into client conversations as Cybersecurity Awareness Month comes to a close.

Use October to create engagement, but don’t allow the security conversation to disappear in November. Continue asking questions such as:

Are systems being updated? Are employees following established security practices? Have new applications or devices entered the environment? Are employees prepared for emerging threats? Does training continue throughout the year?

Those conversations help position cybersecurity as an ongoing business discipline rather than a once-a-year initiative.

Check the Alarm

The final pillar of BSN’s Lock It Down Cybersecurity Awareness Month theme is The Alarm System.

Think about an alarm installed in a home: Installing it is an important step. But you wouldn’t expect it to protect the house forever without ever checking it, maintaining it, or making sure it’s still working properly.

Cybersecurity is no different. The technology matters. The maintenance matters. And the habits employees practice throughout the year matter.

So as Cybersecurity Awareness Month comes to an end, don’t let cybersecurity awareness end with it.

Check the alarm. Maintain the system. Keep your employees engaged. And carry the momentum from Cybersecurity Awareness Month into the other eleven months of the year.
