Ransomware Attacks up 105% in Q1 of 2019

Ransomware Is Not Randomware

Gone are the days where you “might know” someone who has, or will, come under attack to a ransomware attack.  The skyrocket in cases has come in at a 105% increase according to Beazley Breach Response (BBR) Services team which compared numbers against their 2018 data.

Adding insult to injury, the ransom amounts are increasing as well.  Again, comparing data from the previous year, the ransoms paid were 93% higher.  This makes this type of cybercrime even more appealing to the hackers, as they hope for a high return on a low blow.

Easy Breezy

Phishing emails, banking scams…these cast a wide net on the user community and it only takes one unsuspecting and uninformed person to bring down a whole company.  Initially designed to steal banking information, a banking Trojan can now obtain an incredible amount of account credentials.  Again, a high payoff that can provide multiple returns for one attack.

While our professional titles may remain the same, cybersecurity has mandated that our job descriptions evolve and include not only deploying a strong security program, but also taking on the responsibility to be informed and educated.   Management has to provide the tools and employees must use them – otherwise, everyone’s job is in jeopardy.
