The new courses extend BSN’s role-based learning strategy beyond cybersecurity, connecting responsible AI guidance to the tasks, information and decisions employees manage in Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, Sales and Support.
BSN introduced role-based cybersecurity training earlier this year for Finance, HR, IT, Management, Marketing and Sales. Together, the cybersecurity and AI courses help organizations move beyond one-size-fits-all training by showing employees how risks and responsibilities appear within their specific roles.
From Awareness to Application
After training more than 1 million employees over the past decade, BSN has learned that awareness is only the starting point. Employees also need to recognize how a risk appears in their work and understand what to do when the decision is theirs to make.
A Finance employee reviewing a payment request faces different risks than an HR professional handling employee information, an IT professional managing systems or a marketer preparing public-facing content. Their training should reflect those differences.
This approach is reinforced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce that develops widely used cybersecurity standards and guidance. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 distinguishes between general workforce training and training for specialized roles, stating that people in specialized roles should have the knowledge and skills to perform relevant tasks with cybersecurity risks in mind.
NIST Special Publication 800-50 Rev. 1 recommends connecting learning tracks to work roles and job performance. It also uses role-relevant generative AI training as an example and emphasizes evaluating whether employees can apply what they learn—not simply whether they complete a course.
Broader workplace learning research supports the same principle. A peer-reviewed analysis of 89 workplace training studies, published in the Journal of Management, examined “training transfer”—whether employees apply what they learn once they return to their jobs. It found that learning is more likely to transfer when training closely resembles the situations employees will encounter at work.
That is why BSN’s role-based approach is not about adding more training. It is about making training more relevant, recognizable and easier to apply when it matters.
Extending Role-Based Learning from Cybersecurity to AI
BSN’s role-based cybersecurity courses build on foundational awareness training with scenarios related to the work of Finance, HR, IT, Management, Marketing and Sales. These scenarios address responsibilities ranging from invoices, payments and sensitive employee information to system access, leadership decisions, public-facing content and customer data.
The new role-based AI training brings the same approach to Marketing, HR, Finance, Sales and Support. Each approximately 13-minute course shows employees where AI can support common responsibilities while reinforcing responsible use and human accountability.
Employees learn to identify appropriate opportunities for AI, begin with small, low-risk pilot projects, protect sensitive information and review AI-generated work for accuracy, context, tone and bias. Each course also includes a knowledge check and a downloadable guide with role-specific prompts, pilot ideas and planning resources employees can use after training.
More Role-Based Training Ahead
Cybersecurity and AI are the first two areas in BSN’s expanding role-based training strategy. Future releases will extend the approach to productivity training, including Microsoft 365.
